Mobile workers and teleworkers require instant connectivity to meet company expectations, and companies must ensure a secure communication between users and the data, machines and applications in order to succeed. In our second part of decoding computer technology acronyms, we explain acronyms in the area of remote access technology to help further your understanding.

LAN: Local Area Network
A LAN is a computer network that interconnects computers in a limited area using network media, in homes, schools, or office buildings for instance. In contrast to wide area networks, WANs, local area networks are defined by their smaller geographic area and non-inclusion of leased telecommunication lines.

WAN: Wide Area Network
A WAN is a computer network that spans a comparatively large geographical area. A WAN generally consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs). Commonly, computers connected to a wide-area network are connected through public networks, such as the telephone system, although they can also be connected through leased lines or satellites. The largest WAN in existence is the Internet.

VPN: Virtual Private Network
Virtual private networks (VPNs) turn the Internet into a private network through the use of encryption. The combination of cheap, fast and widely available internet connections with strong security features enables the effectiveness of VPNs. Today, the VPN market is basically dominated by SSL VPNs and IPsec VPNs. If you are curious to find out the differences between SSL and IPsec, have a look at Part 1 of this blog series or check out our eBook “How Do I Find the Best VPN Solution for My Company”.

CC: Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation
This is a worldwide recognized standard for the certification of IT products. It addresses security criteria for the comparable verification and evaluation of the security of IT products. The CC certification provides more transparency when it comes to the product’s security level and quality.

HOB RD VPN: HOB Remote Desktop Virtual Private Network
HOB RD VPN is a comprehensive software solution that enables enterprises to secure their server-based computing environment with strong SSL encryption and strong authentication. Therefore this allows for easy access to internal corporate resources from anywhere and at any time. HOB RD VPN is a pure software solution, not an appliance, therefore it is highly scalable and flexible. HOB RD VPN blue edition has also been certified according to Common Criteria EAL 4+, proving its high security standard.
